When you are almost at the top of the hill you reach a small rest area with chairs. Here the path divides. To the left there is a path that takes you to a lower viewing point on Sikunir hill. To the right you can follow another path that takes you all the way to the top of the hill. This is the best place to view sunrise and it’s the path that we took.

From the rest area it’s another ten-minute climb to the top of the hill. You can tell when you are almost at the top, because you can see the silhouette of a hut at the top of the hill (set against the stars. It looks so beautiful, but I couldn’t take a good photo).

At the top of the hill there were a crowd of people sitting down and waiting for the sunset. We tried to find a spot by the front of the crowd.

Top Tip

  • Try to visit during a week day. It’s less crowded than on weekends and you’ll get a lot better view and have a nicer experience.
  • For the best viewpoint; go all the way to the top of the hill in front of the structure. At the edge of the hill there is a dip. There is a meter slope and then an area where the ground levels out. This is the best place to watch the sunrise.

Sikunir hill is one of the places to enjoy the magnificent of the sun that rises at dawn. The hill is situated at an altitude of 2263 meters above the sea level, where many people say that “Here is a place to watch the best beautiful golden sunrise in Indonesia”.

Here we can see the beauty of Mount Sindoro, Slamet and other mountain ranges.
It is located 8 kilometers from Dieng and to get to this mountain we have to climb start from 4 am early in the morning

Transport from Dieng for almost all travellers will be back down the hill to Wonosobo via the regular bus which stops all the way along the main Dieng road. The cost of this journey is 8,000 rupiah and takes an hour to 1.5 hours, but tourists are often charged more. Negotiate if you can, but if you do pay a premium, use this as leverage to get a good spot for your luggage.

From Wonosobo, direct buses go to many places throughout Java:

Banjar (for Pangandaran): 55,000 rupiah taking 6 hours
Jakarta: 75,000 rupiah taking 13 hours
Semarang: 30,000 rupiah taking 4 hours
Surabaya: 110,000 rupiah taking 12 hours
Yogyakarta: 30,000 rupiah taking 4 hours

Accommodation within Dieng is mostly in the form of homestays and located within walking distance of the main Dieng intersection. They are generally of a good standard, but lack of heating makes them icy at night, meaning the quality and quantity of bedding is a critical factor in room choice.
