The food in Central Java is influenced by the two ancient kingdoms of Yogyakarta and Surakarta (also commonly known as Solo). Most of Central Javanese dishes are indigenously developed, however in coastal cities such as Semarang and Pekalongan, notable Chinese influences can be seen, such as lumpia (spring roll) and bakmi Jawa. While in royal court of Surakarta, the European influences can be seen, such as bistik Jawa and selat Solo. Many of Central Java-specific dishes contain the names of the area where the food first became popular

Lumpia Semarang
Originally made by Chinese immigrants, this lumpia is filled with bamboo shoots, dried shrimp, chicken, and/or prawns. It is served with a sweet chili sauce made from dried shrimp (optional), coconut sugar, red chili peppers, bird’s eye chili peppers, ground white pepper, tapioca starch, water, and baby shallots. Lumpia Semarang is served either deep-fried or unfried, as the filling is already cooked.

Lumpia Semarang: fried or steamed spring rolls. The filling varies, but consists mainly of meat and bamboo shoots. It is served with sweet fermented soybean sauce (tauco) or sweet garlic sauce. Another accompaniment is acar (Indonesian-style sweet and sour cucumber pickle) and chili.

Tahu Pong
Tahu pong in pretty popular in Semarang, it’s a lot of place selling this food. One portion of tahu pong is contain of fried tofu, fried boiled egg and “gimbal” (fried cake with shrimp on the top).

Nasi Pecel
Pecel is a traditional Indonesian salad from Java, consisting of a mixed vegetables in peanut sauce dressing, usually served with steamed rice or sometimes.

Nasi Ayam

Nasi ayam is a succulent rice dish cooked in coconut milk, chicken broth and spices. Nasi liwet is a traditional Javanese way of cooking rice in coconut milk.
